Should You Size Up or Down for Boots

Is it better for boots to be bigger or smaller? Size them up with our Blundstone Boot Sizing Guide for kids and adults.

Once in a while, we adults and the kids we love, have to size up our Blundstone boots. Kids’ feet grow and our adult feet change. But is it better for boots to be bigger or smaller?

Blundstone boots for growing kids

If you’ve bought clothes for kids, you already know to size up every piece. You may have asked more than once, “How did those pants get so short — so fast?” And boots are an even more demanding fit.

A new pair of Blundstone boots is worth the time it takes to measure young feet carefully. Kids will grow and we can help you keep their feet comfortable and their outdoor time safer. We have some tips for measuring their foot size, and some groundwork to cover to help you choose the right pair of boots.

Fitting the boots for kids

  • Laces: You can adjust the fit of a boot to your child’s foot by loosening or tightening laces as they grow. This will ensure good wiggle room in the toe box.

  • Elastic sides: These are a plus in any boot for kids. They help make the boots easy to pull on and off and can be adjusted to fit a child's feet as they grow.

  • Additional insoles: Blundstone kids’ boots come with an extra pair of footbeds to accommodate young, growing feet and ensure they get the most out of their Blundstones.

  • Snug fit: Make sure the boots fit snugly, but are not so tight that they restrict your child's movement or cause any discomfort.

  • Comfortable soles: To help prevent sore feet, the sole should provide protection and good support.

  • The weather: Buying boots for winter? Make sure snow boots are waterproof and insulated. Boots for summer should be lightweight and made of breathable material.

Have your child try on several pairs of boots in different sizes to find the best boot with the most comfortable fit. Keep in mind that a nice pair of wool socks or any thicker socks can fill a lightly generous shoe size and keep your child’s feet warm and comfy.

Blundstones for kids include boots such as:

Kids’ Series #565: Like our iconic #550 Chelsea boot, the #565 for kids joins our best boot tradition. Made of water-resistant leather with brown elastic side insert, it has pull tabs for easy on and off, a polyurethane sole and a removable and washable footbed.

Kids’ Series #1325: Here’s a classic Chelsea boot in rustic black with a 5 star rating. It’s crafted of black water-resistant leather with black elastic side insert, Blundstone pull tabs for easy on and off, a polyurethane sole, and a removable washable footbed.

Sizing up Blundstone boots for adults

Visit a shoe store and use their precise Brannock Device. This foot measurement tool will determine your shoe size to less than an eighth of an inch; just measure the length of your foot and at the widest part across the ball of your foot. The Brannock sizing chart will then match you to your correct size, your perfect fit.

The perfect fit

At the end of the day, we have to assess our own foot comfort and any changes we need to make. The perfect fit for an adult may demand some adjustment beyond the addition of a pair of cotton socks with lightweight boots or wool socks with winter boots. Our feet change, and your right size may have become the wrong size since last you checked.

Your sensitive feet

With both feet properly measured and size determined, turn your attention to your foot sensitivities. Blistering or skin dryness, an increase in the width of your feet, a toe now touching the end of the boot, bunions, or plantar fasciitis, toenail changes, a need for stronger instep and arch support, any change in the shape of your foot, all may affect the proper size of the right boot for you. You may need a larger size boot, or you may want to add a pair of thick socks or thinner cotton socks to buffer sensitive spots or minimize heel slippage.

How to choose your new boots

The basics: Your choice will start with asking how and where you plan to wear your Blundstone boots. Will they be hiking boots or work boots, for casual wear or dress, to wear all day or for travel and on weekends?

  • Make sure you have enough room in the toe box for comfortable movement.

  • If you have wide feet, try a half size up to ensure easy movement in the toe area.

  • Lace new boots and shoes to the top eyelet to see how your ankle fits inside the boot. New leather will feel snug, but you’ll know quickly if the discomfort is unreasonable.

  • Allow room of no more than ¼” inside the heel of your boot. You should be able to fit two fingers in the back of the boot when you try them on.

  • Remember, your feet will spread out or swell up a bit by the end of the day, so it’s best to try on boots towards the end of the day.

Try them on, take them home, break them in

The best way to make sure your new boots fit well is to try them on. The best way to settle your feet into a good fit is to properly break them in. You may feel a bit of heel slippage during normal break-in, but if slippage exceeds half an inch you’ll want to wear a pair of socks to avoid chafing and blisters.

It takes about a week for new leather boots to contour to the shape of your foot, so don’t wear your Blundstone boots all day during the break-in period. Once your boots are fully broken in, comfortable trekking can begin in the best boots you’ll ever own.
